Day Seven: Frustrated

Kua tangata whanau ki te ao matihiko or 'Man is born into the digital world'.

If this concept is true as adults have a responsibility to model positive, thoughtful and helpful behaviour for the children, as we are all global citizens.

So the emphasis for today was :

1. Smart learners (learn)

2. Smart footprint (create)

3. Smart Relationships (share)

Therefore, growing students to be connected and confident decision makers, safely at home in this digital world. What was refreshing was to hear the connection to the Treaty of Waitangi: Partnership, participation and protection. It is important for people to reflect on their roles and responsibilities in this world they are born into.

The concepts of the day were nice.

But using the tools was frustration. The trials of this day could have been lessened if this programme wasn't done online.

One presenter was hard to listen to because of poor internet speed, another had a croaky voice and should have just been subbed out. Using both screencasterfy and Explain Everything was just frustrating!!! (When someone in the know next to you could rectify technical quickly so you could just get on with the task at hand.)

The purpose of the day was not to develop empathy for students who struggle but to develop the digital skills that may help empower them.....

This is my first go on 'Explain Everything'

A tool that should work a lot like a smartboard, but I couldn't quite make that happen.

Day 7b: One Hit Wonder

This clip was made using the Screen casterfy tool.  It was made using what I call the 'One hit wonder' approach. That is, it is what it is without editing or tweeking. I see this tool could be a useful for both learning & teaching. It allows both audio and visual presentation.
But for me to use it as a professional teaching tool I still need to learn many things. Particularly how to edit and  crop all those open tabs, record using present mode on the slide deck and be relaxed in front of a camera.

Day Six

For the Manaiakalani pedagogy aspect of this week, it was to be about 'Enabling Access' and being 'Connected'. It did seem like a restating of the weeks before. Recovering the concepts of connection helps with well being and that connection in education is not by default, but by design.

Again, google sites took a good chunk of the time. It was useful to view educational sites that have been produced by teachers with different levels of digital experience. Also to receive feedback on my class site by those same people. It would seem no matter where you sit on the 'google site experience spectrum',we all have something to learn, share and appreciate; which I guess is 'connected' in action.

I set myself the goal of tidying my class site home page, which was done by adding a new page and moving links to it. I did try something new, using the layout template with four pre-existing columns. Now, it was easier to insert links and label. But I felt frustrated that I couldn't click and drag or delete a column on the template. But I did tidy up the home page and create a new page, hopefully making it a more time relevant google site for my students.
