Day Five

 Visible

Interestingly enough the focus for today was the kaupapa of  making teaching and learning visible.

The kupu kitea could be applied because not only would something be visible, but it would be found.

If teaching and learning can be found, easily accessible, expectations known and work exposed; all this could reduce that age old frustration of failure.

The digital tools presented today were the use of multi modal (sheets), sites, blog labels and the teacher dashboard.

Most the time felt like it was taken on creating a google site, using a multi modal approach (giving the learner many different ways to access the learning. With the expectation that hopefully one will resonate with them) on a preselected topic, nominated by the facilitation team. The resource sheet that these topics were chosen from was intensive and I was impressed with the collegial collective effort that was needed to compose it.

However, I would rather have been asked to find resources prior to the session. Then demonstrate or  practise creating a google site using these resources so that I could have ended this day with something ready to meet the need of student/s in my class and tick the DFI box at the same time.

In hindsight the tasks for today would have been most useful if I had known this stuff at the start of March 2020.

Day Four - Tohatoha (share)

Tohatoha or share was the pedagogy kopu of the day.

'Sharing sustains relationships' is a quote from the day that is transferable across a multitude of context.

This week the work done on google sheets has the potential to reduce some of the double handling of data that currently happens within our school. With data, people seem to have their prefered ways of managing it.

My students have completed google forms before. I think this week I will create my first google quiz.

I hope it will be  an efficient way of collecting knowledge data. This may also allow me to experiment more with using éxplore'and importing appropriate charts from the data. That show learning or gaps and therefore be useful with next learning steps.

Day Four - Part 1:My First My Map

This artifact was created using 'My Map'. I did find it a lot like google maps to use. It was frustrating working out how to embed this map onto this blog. It would seem you have to click on the three dots and use the 'Embed on my site'. I think it was the terminology that confused me.

Day Three - Already

Hanga - make or in today's learning context - create with the intention of hooking learners in.

Why would you bother because...
'Creative skills help learners become better problem solvers, communicators and collaborators'A quote from Apple who know what's good business and in this case good for society.

Media holds a world of opportunities and pit falls. It is encouraging to see the creativity and passion the contributors across the mediums have. Learners love Youtube but it is not one I have myself and so it was interesting to see how to create a channel and set smart setting so to be digitally safe.

SiSoMo, Drop n Drag, Pick a Path are all ways of getting creative with slides that may help learners make connections with curriculum content. It was good to be reminded what I know and have the time to play.

Though my students work using google drawings; I have been guilty of having them teach each other how to use this tool. I know a task can be achieved using the tool but I didn't know how to use Google draw myself. The great news is students are good at teaching each other. Today I finally got to play with google drawings and this is my picture.

Day Two of DFI down!

  • This week I wish to acknowledge the support of by peers and facilitator friends who helped me be the learning kind.

  • Ako means learn: that was the kopu of the week being focused on to help gain understanding of Maniakalani kaupapa.
There was a lot covered but one tool that may aid my workflow in a collaborative work space is the 'Keep tool'. It seems a simple means of communication and provides simple check in points without the team having to be physically in the same space.

I had a timely reminder on how to 'bookmark and pin'. The current students in my class are very got at this and with two new ones entering this week I should be able to demonstrate creating a bookmark by pushing the star.

To help improve my capability and test my confidence I did my first ever recording of a google meet presentation with a kind participant Rosey.
You will note that there is an audio issue and I'm not sure why because I was in an office by myself.
It was a relief to complete it.

Would I be confident to take charge to do it again.... no, but I now know more than before.

Yes - Day one of DFI done!

.
Maniakalani has had a decade of helping educators continue the pedagogy of learn, create ,share but move it into using the tools of the 21st century.

The information received today that would improve my workflow as a professional; having clear expectations regarding file names, shared understanding about underlining and the preferred way of pasting not only makes workflow easier for me, but helps the next teacher that the student will have also. Much like the expectations of setting out traditional work books did.

The useful tip I may use in my classroom from this week's lesson maybe getting the students to discover the
appropriate  use of 'heading' integrated into persuasive writing.

Was anything covered today transferable to my personal life? If I do go back to being a tertiary
student the voice typing and referencing tools would make essay writing easier.

The poster was created using a table in google docs. Rather than using Insert pictures, the images
came from explore. I found if frustrating finding how to hide the table lines when working independently.
